This year's NAIDOC theme, The Next Generation - Strength, Vision & Legacy, is about building a solid foundation for our young people and the cultural future they will shape, grounded in the strength of our Elders and history. It celebrates the power of culture and the commitment to creating a legacy of unity, respect, and self-determination for all.
Inspired by this theme, we decided to begin our movement of empowering the next generation by looking in our own backyard first. So, we sat down with our two eldest nephews, Quinton (16) and Jack Jnr (14), to explore the opportunity for them to create their own Athe Threads products.
Both Quinton and Jack Jnr designed their own lanyard/wristlet products, drawing inspiration from their Torres Strait Islander culture and their lived experiences while at home in the Torres Strait. Supported by our family, they created the designs, came up with product names and actively helped behind the scenes to bring their creations to life.
Seeing their visions come to life was an empowering experience for both Quinton and Jack Jnr. They achieved something they hadn’t known they were capable of, while developing valuable skills along the way.
The profits from the sale of these products will go directly to Quinton and Jack Jnr, supporting their pursuit of sporting, educational, and cultural goals as they embark on their journey as the Next Generation.
